Four Eleven Lounge opens.
1937
Originally called the Monterey CafĂ©, then the Golden Gate, then the Sunnyside, it is located at 411 Columbus Avenue. Jazz historian Richard Vaca later calls it one of the many “joints” in the area that “rate as jazz-worthy. Barely.” The club allegedly includes a trapdoor under a piano leading to its bookmaking operation in the cellar. Owner Abe Sarkis survives a shooting there in 1960. The bar is closed in 1968 and demolished thereafter (May 1965-Barnet). The site is now occupied by the Methunion Manor Housing Cooperative.
